As we close out 2025, we write to share a wide range of publications, to celebrate our recent grantee workshop, and to alert you to upcoming award, conference, and job opportunities.

Last spring we co-hosted a series of webinars with historians, activists, and policymakers on the histories and futures of global governance. Our third report from this series is now available on our website. Please help us share it far and wide!

This conversation focused on histories of grassroots activism and transnational movements aimed at global governance institutions, and panelists distilled lessons relevant to our present. We hosted our fourth annual grantee conference last week at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. Ten early-career researchers who received support from our 2025 summer grant came together around the theme Two, Three, Many Developmentalisms.

Grantees received feedback on their works-in-progress from ten respondents. They were also joined by Sarah Bellows-Blakeley (Freie Universität Berlin), who presented a keynote based on her critical historical study of girl-focused development in east Africa, and by Joel Suarez (Harvard University), whose concluding keynote interrogated the categories of labor history and immigration’s relationship to global capitalism. On behalf of HPE grantee Eva-Maria Muschik (‘22), we are pleased to share the call for papers for a conference on New Histories of the “North-South Conflict” to be held July 7-9, 2026, at the University of Vienna. Abstracts are due January 15, and more information is available here.

The Program on Law and Political Economy at Harvard Law School invites nominations for their “Freedom from Want” Writing Award. Three awards of $7,000 each will be given to early-career scholars for papers that address the meaningful decommodification of access to basic needs in America. Submissions are due February 1, and see here for more information.

The Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor focusing on the behavioral or social scientific study of business. The teaching load for this two-year position is four courses per year, and the annual base salary range is $75,000 - $95,000. Applications are due February 1. And the Social Science History Association, under the leadership of Ho-fung Hung, has opened the call for papers for their annual conference. Decentering Modernity, co-chaired by Christy Thornton, will be held November 19-22, 2026, in Atlanta, Georgia. Submissions are due March 1, and learn more about the conference here.
